Regardless of how good H&S management systems are, accidents, incidents and near-misses will still occur. However, better and more robust H&S management systems will greatly assist in decreasing the number of accidents, incidents and near misses.

So what is the difference between an accident, an incident and a near-miss?

An accident is defined as an unplanned, uncontrolled event or series of events which results in injury.

An incident is defined as an accident without injury, but may result in loss or damage to equipment, property etc.

near-miss is defined as an incident without injury or loss.
