………………
• The need to be in a healthcare environment will often mean a person is
feeling particularly vulnerable, anxious, uncomfortable, defensive and scared
• The individual’s dignity and rights need to be respected and supported
• The environment itself can either promote or undermine this
• Failings include: Mixed sex wards; poor facilities, lack of time / communication
• Person centred care helps to overcome these short comings and focus
on the needs of the individual.
• The following 3 concepts underpin this approach:
• Privacy – freedom from unauthorised intrusion or observation
• Modesty – things like dress, speech and behaviour being “proper”
• Confidentiality – Keeping information secure and only divulging
it to others with permission
