To ensure the use of all sharps used within a hospital environment can be done so safely, the following measures must be in place:

  • Risk assessments must be in place that cover the safe use of sharps
  • Appropriate PPE will be identified through the risk assessment process and must be worn by all relevant staff
  • All staff using sharps must be given sufficient training, information, instruction and, where necessary, supervision
  • Staff training must include the hazards and risks associated with the sharps they are expected to use and any control measures they need to adhere to or follow
