Motor Neurone Disease – E-Learning Courses with Certificates – CPDUK Accredited.

LearnPac Systems is the leading UK provider of accredited statutory and mandatory training courses for all sectors, including health and social care, education, local government, private and charity sectors.

Motor neurone disease is an uncommon condition that mainly affects people in their 60s and 70s, but can affect adults of all ages. It is caused by a problem with cells in the brain and nerves called motor neurone, which gradually stop working overtime. There is no cure, but there are treatments to help reduce the impact it has on your daily life.

These motor neurone disease training courses aim to increase your knowledge and understanding of motor neurone disease and to support an individual who has this life-shortening disease.

Motor neurone disease (MND) is an uncommon condition that affects the brain and nerves. It causes weakness that gets worse over time. It’s nearly always fatal and can significantly shorten life expectancy, but some people live with it for many years. There’s no cure, but there are treatments to help reduce the impact it has on your daily life.

LearnPac Systems is the leading UK provider of accredited online training courses, programmes and qualifications. Our interactive learning management system (LMS) can easily be customised to individual organisations, regardless of the size or sector.

The initial symptoms of motor neurone disease may include:

  • a weakened grip
  • a general feeling of tiredness
  • muscle pains and cramps
  • muscle twitches
  • slurred speech
  • weakness in the arms and legs.

Motor neurone disease occurs when specialist nerve cells (motor neurones) in the brain and spinal cord progressively lose their function. It’s not clear why this happens. In most cases, a person with motor neurone disease won’t have a family history of the condition.

Motor neuron disease can appear at any age, but symptoms usually appear after the age of 40 years. It affects more men than women.

Those carrying a fault in a gene leading to MND have a 50 per cent (one in two) chance of passing the genetic error on to their children. However, the risk of someone carrying the faulty gene actually developing MND may be lower than 50 per cent in some cases.

MND is a tough condition to diagnose. The Reason for this is that few cases of MND follow exactly the same pattern. Because MND is relatively rare, patients may have been referred to various specialists before seeing a neurologist. There are currently no specific tests for MND. Where tests are carried out, these are used to rule out other conditions.

This will depend on what type of motor neurone disease you have. Motor neurone disease affects everyone differently, so it is not easy to say for certain how long someone will have the illness for.

There is no cure for motor neurone disease (MND). But, a medication has been approved in Australia for the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) – the most common form of MND. Slow disease progression. Keep people in the milder stages of disease for longer, thus contributing to the quality of life.

About 10% of MND is ‘familial’; that is, there is or has been more than one affected person in a family. The remaining 90% of people with MND are the only affected person in their family and are said to have ‘sporadic’ MND. People with familial MND have the disorder because of a mutation in a gene.

There are many theories, including exposure to environmental toxins and chemicals, infection by viral agents, immune mediated damage, premature ageing of motor neurones, and loss of growth factors required to maintain motor neurone survival and genetic susceptibility.

The disease can be classified into four main types depending on the pattern of motor neurone involvement and the part of the body where the symptoms begin.

  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
  • Progressive bulbar palsy (PBP)
  • Progressive muscular atrophy (PMA)
  • Primary lateral sclerosis (PLS).

There is a 1 in 300 risk of getting motor neurone disease across a lifetime. It can affect adults of any age but is more likely to affect people over 50. Motor  Neurone Disease affects up to 5,000 adults in the UK at any one time. As this is not a common disease, general health and social care professionals may not see many cases of MND.

Motor neurone disease (MND) is a rare neurological condition that causes the degeneration (deterioration and loss of function) of the motor system (the cells and nerves in the brain and spinal cord which control the muscles in our bodies). This results in weakness and wasting of the muscles.

Motor neurone disease is an uncommon condition that mainly affects people in their 60s and 70s, but can affect adults of all ages.

It’s caused by a problem with cells in the brain and nerves called motor neurones. These cells gradually stop working overtime. It’s not known why this happens. Having a close relative with motor neurone disease, or a related condition called frontotemporal dementia, can sometimes mean you’re more likely to get it.

But it does not run in families in most cases.

There’s no cure for motor neurone disease, but treatment can help reduce the impact the symptoms have on your life.

You’ll be cared for by a team of specialists and a GP.

Treatments include:

  • Highly specialised clinics, typically involving a specialist nurse and occupational therapy to help make everyday tasks easier
  • Physiotherapy and exercises to maintain strength and reduce stiffness
  • Advice from a speech and language therapist
  • Advice from a dietitian about diet and eating
  • A medicine called riluzole that can slightly slow down the progression of the condition
  • Medications to relieve muscle stiffness and help with saliva problems
  • Emotional support for you and your carer.

The training has been specifically developed for health and community care professionals including:

  • Community, home care, disability and aged care workers
  • Intake and referral staff
  • Care coordinators and case managers
  • Health, allied health and palliative care professionals
  • Volunteers, pastoral care workers and others who work with people living with MND.

If your neurologist thinks a neurological problem is causing your symptoms, they may advise tests to work out the cause. There is no single test to work out if you have MND, but a range of tests can help rule out other causes. You usually attend these tests as an outpatient, but in some cases, you may need to spend a short stay in hospital.

Depending on your symptoms, your neurologist may advise the following tests:

  • Clinical examination
  • Blood test:
  • Electromyography (EMG)
  • Nerve conduction test
  • Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).
