ABCD refers to the systematic approach to the immediate assessment and treatment of critically ill or injured patients. ABCD stands for airway, breathing, circulation, and decision.

The golden rules of first aid are as follows:

  • Use a systematic approach in all medical emergencies.
  • Identify and avoid risks to yourself, the person affected and third parties.
  • Request support early (first aiders, AED, emergency number 144).
  • Be “suspicious” and primarily assume it is something serious.
  • Deal quickly with any chaos and cope with the situation.
  • Position the patient so that they feel comfortable (except in the event of a suspected spinal injury).
  • Only let one person talk to the patient.
  • Get professional support much quicker in case of emergencies with children.
  • Ensure there is leadership. One person must always take the lead.
  • Only transport patients by ambulance or taxi.

The top first aid kit tools are as follows:

  • First aid manual
  • Tweezers
  • Alcohol swabs
  • Antibiotic ointment
  • Bandages
  • Gauze pads
  • Medical tape
  • Elastic bandages
  • Pain relievers
  • Instant cold pack.

While they can support a qualified first aider, appointed persons should not attempt to give first aid for which they have not been trained. However, they can provide emergency cover if a first aider is unexpectedly absent.

The first aid course takes about one day, usually around 6 or 7 hours with both theoretical and practical elements. Following such a course, a first aider will be trained to deal with extreme emergency situations, such as administering CPR and dealing with people who are choking or bleeding severely.

In administering first aid, it is essential to consider the following factors:

  • Duty of care
  • Negligence
  • Consent
  • Recording.

A duty of care is a legal obligation set on an individual requiring that they conform to a standard of reasonable care while performing any acts that could foreseeably harm others. It is the first element that must be established to proceed with an action in negligence.

One set of goals of first aid is called the 3 Ps. These include:

  • Preserve life
  • Prevent further injury
  • Promote recovery.

For the 1-day Emergency First Aid at Work course, attendees are taught a mixture of both practical and theory. You will learn how to examine a casualty, use a defibrillator, familiarise basic life support and learn how to control bleeding and trauma.

DOTS is an acronym used to remember what to look for when conducting a physical assessment of a casualty DOTS stands for deformities, open wounds and tenderness.

Commercially available first aid kits available via normal retail routes have traditionally been intended for the treatment of minor injuries only. Typical contents include adhesive bandages, regular strength pain medication, gauze and low-grade disinfectant.

The first four steps of first aid for injuries such as ankle sprains are known as RICE. Rice stands for rest, ice, compression, and elevation.
