Basic life support (BLS) comprises the following elements:
- Initial assessment
- Airway maintenance
- Chest compression
- Expired air ventilation (rescue breathing).
Yes, our online basic life support training course is suitable for all healthcare and social care staff who work with adults and children in both clinical and non-clinical roles.
Nowadays, health and social care organisations allow healthcare and social care staff to earn and renew their BLS card either in person or online. If they choose the online option, they have to take an in-person skills test. However, plenty of respected organisations offer both BLS certification and recertification entirely online.
Basic life support (BLS) is a level of medical care that is beneficial for those who have life-threatening illnesses or injuries until they can be given full medical care at a hospital. It can be provided by trained medical personnel, including certified first responders, emergency medical technicians and qualified bystanders. This procedure can prove to be very helpful when it comes to saving the life of an individual.

Basic life support training courses are essential as they can help people who are choking, drowning or suffering from cardiac arrest. BLS is included in all first aid training courses, alongside other life-saving techniques and procedures such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
Basic life support (BLS) is available in two different training methods, including blended learning and classroom training.

Our basic life support instructor training is suitable for anyone who is looking to become, or renew as a CPR instructor.
Basic Life Support (BLS) generally refers to the type of care that first-responders, healthcare providers and public safety professionals provide to anyone who is experiencing cardiac arrest, respiratory distress or an obstructed airway. It requires knowledge and skills in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), using automated external defibrillators (AED) and relieving airway obstructions in patients of every age.
There is no specific age requirement. Anyone who works in healthcare, social care and community settings can learn basic life support.
Healthcare and social care professionals and staff must take the basic life support course as their job requires ensuring patient safety at all times.
There are three main components that someone would want to check when performing BLS. These include circulation, airway, breathing.
Rescuers who have been taught adult BLS, and have no specific knowledge of paediatric resuscitation, should use the adult sequence. The following modifications to the adult sequence will, however, make it more suitable for use in children:
- Give five initial rescue breaths before starting chest compression (adult sequence step 5B).
- If you are on your own, perform CPR for 1 min before going for help.
- Compress the chest by approximately one-third of its depth. Use two fingers for an infant under 1 year, and use one or two hands for a child over 1 year as needed to achieve adequate depth of compression.
Basic life support training is mandatory for registered nurses and healthcare assistants but is beneficial to all. The syllabus follows the guidelines of the Resuscitation Council (UK). Also, it includes the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) and the DRABCD approach to resuscitation.
The content of our online basic life support training course and end of course assessment has been independently certified as conforming to universally accepted Continuous Professional Development (CPD) guidelines.
The different types of CPR and lifesaving courses are as follows:
- Basic Life Support CPR
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support
- Heartsaver First Aid & CPR.
The BLS certification course is designed to take about four hours, or a half-day, excluding breaks. That timeframe is projected based on the recommended instructor-student ratio, which covers one instructor, six students and two manikins.
The BLS course is designed to provide healthcare and social care professionals with the ability to recognise several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner.
- Keep the compression rate of at least 100 minutes for all persons.
- Keep compression depth of between 2-2.4 inches for adults and children and about 1.5 inches for infants.
- Allow complete chest recoil after each compression. Minimise interruptions in CPR, except to use an AED or to change rescuer positions.
Our online basic life support training course meets the Skills for Health’s UKCSTF, Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and Care Quality Commission (CQC) recommendations for health and social care providers.
The CPD Certification Service accredits all our online training courses and programmes as conforming to universally accepted Continuous Professional Development (CPD) guidelines.
Choking is defined as a partial or complete obstruction in the food pipe or throat due to a foreign body such as food, water, or a toy. Choking is a form of asphyxia where there is little or no flow of oxygen to the body. It may result in unconsciousness and/or even death.
An automated external defibrillator is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation and pulseless ventricular tachycardia.
Respiratory failure and shock are the most common causes of cardiopulmonary arrest in the pediatric population. Their management, along with the management of other cardiac dysrhythmias, pulseless electrical activity (PEA), and asystole are essential goals of pediatric resuscitation.
The immediate life support course is a multidisciplinary 1-day course which provides the essential knowledge and skills that are necessary for the initial phase of treating a critically ill patient who needs resuscitation. It is ideally suited for the training of healthcare providers at all stages and levels.
CPR/AED training is an essential resource in an emergency. Effective bystander CPR provided immediately after sudden cardiac arrest can double or triple a person’s chances of survival. The training should include how to recognise a person experiencing sudden cardiac arrest, which often comes without symptoms.
To initiate basic life support in an emergency, it is essential to do the following:
- Check for a response.
- Check the patient’s airway.
- Check for breathing and circulation.
- Recovery position.
- Begin chest compressions.
- Pinch nose and tilt head.
- Breathe into the patient.
If there is anyone present, you should also ask them to get an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) if there is one available.
Mouth to mouth resuscitation, a form of artificial ventilation, is the act of assisting or stimulating respiration in which a rescuer presses their mouth against that of the person to blow air into the lungs.
You should not halt compressions to deliver breaths. In fact, the rule of thumb is to press hard and fast. You need to achieve 100 to 120 compressions per minute. You must not stop your compressions, but the person on respirations has to administer the breaths every eight to ten seconds.
To ensure performing high-quality CPR and chest compressions, it is vital to:
- Kneel by the side of the victim.
- Place the heel of one hand in the centre of the person’s chest.
- Place the heel of your other hand on top of the first hand.
- Interlock the fingers of your hands and ensure that pressure is not applied to the victim’s ribs.
To perform rescue breathing:
- Pinch the victim’s nose to close nostrils. Keep the airway open by the head-tilt, chin-lift.
- Take a deep breath and seal your lips around the outside of the victim’s mouth, preferably with a CPR barrier mask, creating an airtight seal.
The goal of rescue breathing is to add oxygen to the body when the victim is not able to breathe on their own or lacks enough oxygen in their lungs to sustain life. If a victim needs to get oxygen into their lungs, breathing life into them might be their only hope.
The BLS Survey includes four steps:
- Check for a response:
- Shout “Are you okay?”
- Do not be afraid to yell.
- Call for help:
- Yell for help. Tell others to call 911 and to bring an AED.
- Check circulation:
- In adults, the best place to check for a pulse is the carotid artery.
- Check rhythm:
- This step requires an AED.
In spite of the variety of injuries possible, several principles of first aid apply to all emergencies, such as:
- Aims
- Protection against further injury
- Preservation of life
- Promotion of recovery
- Prevention of injuries for people of any age
- Promotion of healthy lifestyles.
Advanced cardiac life support, or advanced cardiovascular life support, often referred to by its abbreviation as “ACLS”, refers to a set of clinical algorithms for the urgent treatment of cardiac arrest, stroke, myocardial infarction, and other life-threatening cardiovascular emergencies.
